Enclosures, from the Governor of Hong Kong,
relating to a vacant piece of land adjoining the British Post Office at Shanghai.
2. Lord Lansdowne will probably agree that it is of great importance that the British Post Office at Shanghai should be in a position to expand, if necessary, at a future date. I am to add that Mr. Chamberlain has recently approved proposals involving a considerable increase in the annual expenditure from Hong Kong finances for this Post Office.
3. Mr. Chamberlain would therefore be glad if his Lordship could see his way to give directions that the land in question should not be disposed of until he is in a position to consider the views of H.M. Minister at Peking upon the enclosed correspondence.
4. It is requested that the enclosures to Sir Henry Blake's despatch, which are sent in original, may eventually be returned to this office.
